I'm Adopted - Ask Me How It Feels

As an Adult Adoptee it’s a frequent conversation in my life that seems to be on “repeat”. I would be willing to bet money on the fact that most of my fellow adoptees have experienced similar narratives.

“Oh, my best friends’ son is adopted, and he doesn’t have any issues like you do” or “My husband was adopted, and he’s thankful he was given a better life”

Sadly, every time a non-adoptee speaks on behalf of an adopted person it’s evasive of the truth and the realities many adoptees face today. So many people who aren’t adopted want to speak FOR US, but not many want to take the time to LISTEN TO US. We continuously have birth parents, adoptive parents, relatives via adoption or biological, mental health professionals and any non-adoptees trying to speak for us and we’re no longer going to tolerate this in our daily lives.

This graphic design was inspired from a vision to promote Adoptees to turn the tides on non-adoptees speaking for us. It’s a way to spark an open dialog with those OFFLINE in our real lives and communities to share how it feels to be adopted. It’s another way to speak up and share our stories because we matter and our stories matter. It’s a way to share our truth as we see it by sparking conversations with others. This gives us a gateway to share our truth but also opens a window of a possible teaching opportunity for anyone who’s not adopted who might have the willingness to learn from our very valuable lived experiences.

Sharing is healing.
Adoptees are the real experts in Adoption.
Please stop speaking for us.
